Montreal's Notre-Dame Basilica unveils its restored facade after 10 years
East tower
4,500 stones replaced
Crews replaced 4,500 stones on the east tower, far more than the 1,800 first expected.
The whole project is now estimated at $100 million, twice the first estimate. Work on the sides and back should finish for the building's 200th anniversary in 2029.
What's next
To help pay, the walkway between the two towers will reopen to visitors, as it did in the 1850s. The vault will be restored in 2030, probably with the basilica closed.
