Arson fire hits the former convent in Trois-Pistoles, Quebec; demolition under way

The Sûreté du Québec says the Sunday fire at the convent, built in 1882, was set. Two minors were questioned and released on a promise to appear.

110 firefighters

About 110 firefighters from some 15 stations were sent at the height of the blaze.

Strong winds spread the fire and forced evacuations. More than 1,800 addresses lost power, a boil-water advisory is in place and the neighbouring school is closed for the day.

Background

The building, empty for more than six years, was bought in March to be turned into about 30 affordable housing units. Work was due to start Monday.
