Quebec has granted very little power to data centres since 2023

Granted to data centres since Feb 15, 2023

11 MW

Only 11 megawatts have gone to data centres since Feb 15, 2023, less than 1 per cent of the 1,500 MW allocated to new large consumers.

Requests under review total 2,500 MW, and Google wants 380 MW for a project in Beauharnois. Quebec is short of power: Hydro-Québec became a net importer of electricity in 2025.

And us?

Hydro-Québec wants to raise the data-centre rate from about 7 cents to 13 cents a kilowatt-hour to shield other customers from increases. The industry opposes it.
