A long hospital corridor

Breast cancer screening waits in Abitibi-Témiscamingue run 13 times the target

Possible wait for a screening mammogram

1.5 years

Women in Quebec's Abitibi-Témiscamingue region eligible for the breast cancer screening program could wait up to a year and a half for a mammogram. The government's target is six weeks or less.

The region has done more than 10,200 mammograms this year, up from 7,100 at the same point last year, with the same staff. Four of 10 radiologist positions are vacant.

What women can do

The regional health authority says women can book a mammogram in another city in the region or at a private clinic, where some exams are covered by Quebec's health insurance plan.
