Supreme Court agrees to hear B.C.'s appeal in a Nuchatlaht land title case
In 2024 the Nuchatlaht, a First Nation of about 160 members, won Canada's second-ever declaration of Aboriginal title, on Nootka Island off the western edge of Vancouver Island.

In April the B.C. Court of Appeal extended the title to the full 201-square-kilometre claim; the province wants the original declaration of about 11 square kilometres restored.
“There’s no reason to continue with this,” said Jack Woodward, counsel for the Nuchatlaht, who urged the next provincial government to pull out of the case.
