Not at the door

Trump told a Michigan rally on Sunday that a deal would be settled quickly, while a source close to the talks says essential elements remain unresolved.

Talks have picked up in recent days: LeBlanc cancelled events in New Brunswick and spent the weekend in Ottawa in contact with U.S. counterparts. The gap still looks too wide for a quick deal, the source says.

Other sources say the Trump administration gains from looking close to a deal, with the midterm elections a little over a week away.

Bloc Québécois leader Yves-François Blanchet says the midterms could open a chance to de-escalate tariffs, and urged the prime minister to explore it.
