Carney says the U.S. is coming closer to Canada's position in trade talks

"To the extent any progress has been made, it's because the U.S. is coming closer to our position."

— Prime Minister Mark Carney

Sticking points since August

  • U.S. tariffs on Canadian trucks
  • French-language labelling rules
  • Streaming discoverability rules
  • U.S. oversight of Canadian trade policy

Carney describes a small intensification in the talks, which collapsed in late August. He says Canada will not sign what was offered then.

And us?

According to reports, the two countries are working on a deal to ease U.S. tariffs on Canadian steel and autos, including Canada's struggling auto industry.

What we know

  • Carney sees a small intensification
  • Talks are at the political level

Not yet

  • Whether a deal lands before Nov 3
  • Whether the U.S. would honour one

Asked how he knows Trump would stand by a deal, Carney answered "I don't"; sources doubt one will land before the Nov 3 U.S. midterms.
