Carney opens the door to reforming or abolishing the Indian Act

"I am committed to a process that moves Canada beyond the Indian Act, and I am directing my ministers to work in partnership with First Nations to chart that path together."

— Prime Minister Mark Carney

Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew told Carney at the meeting that it is time to abolish the Act. Carney credited him, and said a consultation process is still to be determined.

Background

It was the first meeting of the prime minister, premiers and First Nations leaders since the Kelowna Accord talks of 2005. Carney said not everybody in the room agreed with the proposal.
