Bloc Québécois asks Ottawa to demand royalties from digital giants

Promised to the cultural sector

600 $ million

The Bloc's motion, debated Monday, asks the Carney government to pay the $600 million it promised the cultural sector. It also asks Ottawa to respect the CRTC's 15 per cent levy on American digital giants, which the government dropped.

Leader Yves-François Blanchet expects the motion to fail. He says Ottawa has a moral duty to support the arts, culture and news media.

Background

The government dropped the levy hoping to ease Trump's tariff threats during trade talks. Blanchet urges the prime minister to explore a de-escalation of tariffs.
