Saab picks Halifax's IMP to assemble Gripen jets in Canada
Saab's Canadian partners
- IMP, Halifax: final assembly and support
- Magellan, Mississauga: airframe structures
- CAE, Montreal: training
Saab signed a teaming agreement with IMP Aerospace & Defence for final assembly of the Gripen E in Halifax, and agreements with Magellan Aerospace and CAE.
What we know
- Deals depend on Ottawa picking the Gripen
- The engine is American, under US export control
Not yet
- How many jobs it would create
- What it would cost
The agreements apply only if Ottawa buys the Gripen E instead of its order for U.S.-made F-35s, and Saab's release gives no job numbers or cost.
The 88-jet F-35 order
16 under contract 72 under review
Canada has 16 F-35s under contract and has paid early costs on 14 more, while the remaining 72 of the 88-jet order are under review.
What's next
Industry Minister Mélanie Joly said on Oct 14 that a decision on major defence purchases could come within a couple of weeks.
