Montreal police turn a camera away from a resident's kitchen window
"I felt invaded," said Alexandra, after a Montreal police surveillance camera was mounted in August on the lamppost outside her Ville-Marie apartment, level with her kitchen window.
— Alexandra, Ville-Marie resident
What the camera can do
- Films in high resolution
- Pivots in every direction
- Zooms in
- Tracks chosen objects with AI
The camera films in high resolution, pivots in every direction, zooms, and can use artificial intelligence to recognize and track objects its operator picks. Police can watch its feed at any time.
What we know
- The camera now faces away from the window
- Police say it only films public space
Not yet
- Why the residents got no notice
- Why its location is not listed online
The Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) says the camera never captures images of the apartment and only views public space, and on Wednesday it had been turned away from the window. Police did not explain why the residents got no notice.
