Airlines ask Ottawa to allow 14-hour duty days for pilots
What carriers want
- Duty day: 13 to 14 hours
- Work week: 60 to 70 hours
- 28 days: 192 to 210 hours
At least 18 carriers have asked Transport Canada for exemptions that would lengthen pilots' maximum duty day from 13 to 14 hours and their work week from 60 to 70 hours.
The carriers, mostly in remote regions, say the 2020 rules do not fit the north's unpredictable weather and airports. They say cancelling a flight instead of delaying it hurts isolated communities.
