Carney says Canada is not yet in position to strike a US trade deal before the midterms
Prime Minister Mark Carney told reporters Wednesday that Canada is “not at that position right now” on a deal with the Trump administration. Talks have sped up in recent days, but the Canadian side calls the progress limited.
“We’re prepared to have a good deal for Canadians, the right deal for Canadians.”

Cabinet ministers briefed on the talks, speaking on background, doubt Trump will make the concessions needed, especially on auto tariffs. One called it “now or maybe never” for a window before the vote.
