Competition Bureau says an Air Canada-United arrangement would raise fares on 10 routes
The Competition Bureau found the proposed arrangement could harm competition on 10 Canada-US routes, costing travellers millions of dollars a year. Its report went to Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon.
The routes link Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa and Vancouver with seven US cities, including New York and Chicago. They are restricted by a 2012 consent agreement.
Routes with no rival non-stop
5 of the 10 routes
The two airlines account for all non-stop traffic on five of the 10 routes.
And us?
Travellers flying between Canada and the US on these routes would likely face higher prices and less choice, the Bureau says.
