Ottawa has paid out $83.2 billion in class action settlements to First Nations since 2007, a report says

Class action settlements since 2007

83.2 $ billion

The Fraser Institute estimates class action settlements since 2007 have cost the federal government $83.2 billion, or 73.5 per cent of all lawsuit payouts to First Nations since 1974.

Who received the $83.2 billion

49.4 $ billion to individuals 33.8 $ billion to First Nations

Of the $83.2 billion, $49.4 billion went to individual Indigenous people and $33.8 billion to First Nations and other organizations.

Nine class actions have been settled since 2007, including cases over residential schools, the “sixties scoop” and safe drinking water. As of Sep 8, 694 specific claims were still being considered, plus 99 in litigation.

Report co-author Tom Flanagan argues that payments for historical wrongs should be falling, not rising, and questions whether they improve Indigenous well-being.
