Minimum fine
5,000 $ for unauthorized paid advice
A new fines policy, in effect Wednesday, sets a minimum fine of $5,000 for anyone who gives immigration advice or acts as a representative for pay without authorization.
The minimum fine for knowingly giving "false or misleading" immigration advice is $15,000. Fines will be higher when an application was approved on false information, and for repeat offenders.
Who can advise
Lawyers and members of the College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants are among those authorized to give immigration advice.
What's next
A registry of people sanctioned under the new program is expected to be in place in 2027.
