Canada-EU summit opens in Montreal, with a draft statement adding subsea cables and an LNG study

The joint draft proposes new subsea cable links between Europe, Canada and Asia, a feasibility study on Canadian liquefied natural gas exports to Europe, and work opportunities for young people across the Atlantic.

“What matters is the difference it will make to the lives of Canadians.”

— Prime Minister Mark Carney

Leaders hold talks on Friday after a welcome dinner on Thursday, and officials plan to publish the joint statement then. Carney says the summit launches formal negotiations that will take another year.
