Canada-EU summit ends in Montreal, with a digital trade deal expected

European Council President Antonio Costa said he expects a digital trade agreement to be finalized Friday, along with news on science partnerships and university student exchanges.

The three leaders said they would like Canada to become an “associate member” of the European Union. Germany rejects the term, and Canadian officials avoid it.

The Conservatives criticized the summit, noting that nine EU countries have yet to ratify a decade-old trade deal with Canada.
