Auditor general: Ottawa quietly dropped its pledge to ban thermal coal exports

Environment and Climate Change Canada stopped work on the ban in November 2024, after lobbying from the coal industry. The decision was formalized in August 2025, with no public announcement.

“The lack of public information and updates on the government's current approach is concerning.”

Months, on average

4 months to pass on intelligence

The financial intelligence agency FINTRAC takes about four months on average to pass intelligence to law enforcement. A survey by the auditor general's office found it arrives too late to be useful half the time.

Another audit found the Canadian Dental Care Plan went $1.1 billion over budget in its early years. Health Canada has been limited in tracking whether it improves oral health.
