Ottawa launches a telecom roadmap to boost competition and consumer choice
Industry Minister Mélanie Joly's plan aims to break down regional barriers in internet and mobile services. Ottawa says it will make it easier for providers to use existing networks or expand their own.
Cellular plan prices vs 2019
49 % lower
Ottawa says cellular plan prices are down 49 per cent compared with 2019. It says it will spotlight competitive offers on the market.
The government says it will help companies deploy fibre-optic networks and try new technologies. It also wants to strengthen connectivity in northern, rural and Indigenous communities.
How progress is measured
- Prices
- Switching behaviour
- Network speeds
- Coverage
- Consumer complaints
Ottawa will track progress through these indicators.
