The Belleville officer hurt in a synagogue shooting is released from hospital

Const. Jeff Smith is recovering at home and continues to make "positive progress", Belleville police said Thursday.

He was shot several times outside the Sons of Jacob synagogue on Sept 20, Yom Kippur, and needed multiple surgeries. About two dozen people were inside; no one in the synagogue was hurt.

Police say the shooting was motivated by hate. The suspect, a 29-year-old man from Quinte West, died in hospital a day later, and the Special Investigations Unit is reviewing the officers' conduct.
