Ottawa's national security strategy puts protecting the economy at its centre

The strategy, released Thursday, calls for better handling of shocks to the economy while fostering growth and innovation. It warns of espionage, foreign interference, great-power rivalry, rapid advances in AI, climate change and pandemics.

What comes next

  • Foreign policy in about a month
  • Defence, security, intelligence policies in coming months
  • First ministers' security meeting, likely next year
  • Proposals to modernize security laws within a year

The strategy is to be followed by more detailed plans, starting with a new foreign policy in about a month.

Prime Minister Mark Carney writes that Canada's past strengths, close ties and deep integration with other countries, have become vulnerabilities. It is the first overarching policy since 2004.
