Alberta bill would let the education minister standardize school report cards
Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides says parents are confused by the one-to-four grading scale many elementary schools use. If Bill 35 passes, new rules would be in place by fall 2027, but the province won't dictate a single format.
Also in the bill
- Public reports on teachers' non-teaching days
- A process for unresolved parent concerns
- Parents told of serious child-care incidents
The bill would also require school authorities to report how teachers spend days when students are not in class.
NDP critic Rakhi Pancholi says the bill interferes with school boards and isn't an urgent public concern. The Alberta Teachers' Association asks what problem it is meant to solve.
