Etihad opens a direct Calgary-Abu Dhabi flight

Etihad Airways now flies the route four days a week on Boeing 787 Dreamliners that carry about 300 passengers. It connects western Canada with the United Arab Emirates for the first time.

Trade target with the UAE

7 $ billion a year

The UAE is Canada's top export market in the Middle East, and Prime Minister Mark Carney's government wants to double annual trade to about $7 billion.

"It was the first time I've seen the government react to say, 'You know what? The west also is important and it needs a special spot there.'"

— Chris Dinsdale, CEO of Calgary's airport

And us?

Etihad says the route opens travel from western Canada to India, Africa and the Middle East. A passenger on the first flight said it saves her family layovers in Vancouver or Toronto.
