Quebec's new culture minister promises action, not symbolism

We will take the most urgent and significant steps, the ones with a real impact. We won't be in symbolism.

Bérubé wants a mission to the United States to convince streaming platforms to carry more Quebec works. Quebec passed a law on French-language cultural content last December but has set no quota yet; the government wants a 30 per cent threshold.

The Union des artistes (UDA) put artificial intelligence at the top of its priorities at Bérubé's first official meeting, on Friday. Its president, Tania Kontoyanni, called it "a great threat to the survival of our culture".

What's next

Bérubé promised an announcement "in the coming days" on the future of Quebec music, a week before the Adisq gala. A report by the French Language Commissioner on Oct 13 found Quebec shuns music in its own language more than elsewhere.
