Ottawa delays tougher vehicle emissions standards to 2029

In February, the government dropped the electric-vehicle sales mandate and promised to double the strictness of tailpipe limits from 2027. Eight months later, Prime Minister Mark Carney says the standards will stay at 2026 levels until 2029.

What's next

Consultations on the new measures are not expected to begin until early 2027, with draft regulations to follow shortly after.

Experts say the delay gives Ottawa time to watch US policy, but it also pushes back the promised timeline. In September, US President Donald Trump issued fuel-economy standards that eased rules on automakers.
