Parks Canada to close at least 13 park warden detachments, according to several sources

Full-time positions to be cut

500 positions

Parks Canada plans $145 million in cuts over three years and expects to lose about 500 full-time positions. Since Oct 20 it has sent 2,917 letters telling employees their job is affected, which does not always mean a layoff.

Detachments named to close

  • Kejimkujik, Nova Scotia
  • Fundy, New Brunswick
  • Point Pelee, Ontario
  • Elk Island, Alberta
  • Gulf Islands, B.C.

The closures include Kejimkujik, Fundy, Point Pelee, Elk Island, Gulf Islands, Kluane and Nahanni, according to several sources. The agency will prioritize a regional law enforcement service of 85 officers.

And us?

Parks Canada welcomed a record 26.2 million visitors in 2025-26. The union asks how quickly help would arrive if a warden is hurt or ill, with fewer people spread over such a large territory.

“Parks Canada has a responsibility to protect these places for future generations. [...] That responsibility does not disappear just because budgets are cut.”
