Alberta rejects Elections Alberta's request to delay the 2027 vote

Alberta

Justice Minister Mickey Amery says the government has "no intention of changing" the fixed election date, set in law for on or before Oct 18, 2027.

Ridings on the proposed map

91 up from 87 today

Chief Electoral Officer Gordon McClure asked MLAs to hold the vote on the current boundaries or postpone it, saying his office needs 12 to 18 months to implement a new map with 91 ridings, up from 87.

Amery says the legislature will set the final boundaries before the fall sitting ends. That would give Elections Alberta about 320 days, roughly 11 months, to prepare.

The NDP says the new map, tabled Monday, splits Lethbridge across four ridings and amounts to gerrymandering. The party says about 40 per cent of the city's residents would vote with rural communities.
