Ottawa approves a new Sorel-Tracy port before Quebec's review ends

Environment Minister Julie Dabrusin approved QSL International's new terminal in Sorel-Tracy in September. It would handle more than 400,000 tonnes of cargo a year.

The federal impact assessment found the terminal would destroy critical habitat of the copper redhorse, an endangered species found only in Quebec. QSL's habitat compensation plan is not yet approved.

Quebec's public hearings body, the BAPE, has until Jan 7, 2027 to report. The province says its own review is independent and it will decide whether to authorize the project.

The federal government is once again coldly authorizing another destructive project in the critical habitat of the copper redhorse.
