Isle-aux-Coudres is cut off after its ferry hits the dock
Isle-aux-Coudres
Charlevoix, Quebec
The ferry Joseph-Savard suffered an electrical failure affecting its propulsion during its 9 a.m. Sunday crossing and hit the dock at Saint-Joseph-de-la-Rive. Its hull is damaged.
The municipality declared a state of emergency Sunday evening. On Monday the school was closed and islanders were still cut off from the mainland.
What we know
- Joseph-Savard is out of service
- Radisson cannot carry heavy trucks
Not yet
- Return to service Wednesday, if repairs go as planned
The ferry Radisson, normally on the Quebec City–Lévis crossing, was sent Monday to serve the island, but it cannot carry heavy trucks. Quebec's ferry agency expects the Joseph-Savard back on Wednesday if repairs go as planned.
Quebec MNA Caroline Simard says the emergency plan has flaws: she chartered a helicopter herself to take a recent kidney transplant recipient to hospital. She alleges the plan did not cover people who recently had transplants.
