Ontario's 2026 wildfire season burned nearly 750,000 hectares

The province confirmed 818 fires between Apr 1 and Oct 31, which destroyed 748,736 hectares, about 7,480 square kilometres. The season officially ended on Saturday.

That is up from last year, when 643 fires burned nearly 600,000 hectares.
The season forced the evacuation of more than a dozen communities, mainly in northwestern Ontario.
Before next spring
The province lifted its outdoor fire rules on Sunday and urges people to protect their properties before spring by cleaning gutters and roofs and clearing leaves and woody debris from decks and yards.
