Montreal police fire seven officers over racism allegations
Police chief Fady Dagher said the seven were dismissed administratively on Monday, a first in the force's history. Five worked at station 39 in Montréal-Nord and two at station 21 downtown.
Background
In June, the force broke up a 16-member team at station 39 over allegations of racist conduct toward Black and Arab people. Some officers allegedly kept locks of hair from people they arrested.
What we know
- Seven officers were dismissed on Monday
- Six had already been suspended
Not yet
- Whether prosecutors will lay criminal charges
- Whether more dismissals will follow
Dagher said the officers could no longer pass security-clearance reviews, and that files have gone to Crown prosecutors. He did not rule out more dismissals.
No one is above the rules.
