A car ferry at sea

New Rimouski–Forestville ferry arrives in Quebec

Capacity

90 vehicles

The H.-Journault can carry 350 passengers and 90 vehicles. Built in 2024, it was bought in Greece in February and crossed the Atlantic from Sep 24.

A ferry linked Rimouski, a city of 50,000, and Forestville, on the Côte-Nord, until its operator ended the service in August 2022 over financial losses. The new owner, Rimouski entrepreneur Louis-Olivier Carré, leads a $22.5-million project to bring it back.

If all goes well, the ferry enters service on May 1, 2027 and sails until Oct 31. The crossing of the St. Lawrence estuary takes 1 hour 50 minutes.

What's next

Carré has asked Quebec's Transport Department for $9 million to upgrade both ports, whose ramps now take cars but not heavy trucks. He says talks are going well.
