A Democratic win in the US midterms may change little in Trump's trade war on Canada

Why it matters

The main tariffs on steel, aluminum, autos and the 50 per cent Section 338 tariffs were imposed by executive order, not by Congress.

Experts say Democrats would struggle to curb them, and a two-thirds majority would be needed to override a veto. A sweep would put impeachment on the table, but removal would still need two-thirds of the Senate.

And us?

Canadian negotiators would still need to pitch lower tariffs to Democrats, a University of Guelph professor says, and Trump could turn more hostile toward Canada if Republicans lose.
