Belleville synagogue attacker had no gun licence, a police source says
Sons of Jacob Synagogue
Belleville, Ontario
Sean Ward, a former Canadian Armed Forces corporal, died after a shootout with police outside the Sons of Jacob Synagogue on Sep 20, during Yom Kippur. Investigators call it a hate-motivated attack.
What we know
- He brought several guns, including a shotgun
- He had no licence, a police source says
Not yet
- Where his guns came from
Authorities have not said where his guns came from. The RCMP and Belleville police declined to discuss them, and the RCMP cited the ongoing investigation.
Why it matters
A licence leaves a paper trail that helps police trace a gun's owners, origins and sale. Soldiers also need one to own guns in their private lives.
Constable Jeff Smith, shot in the head in the ambush, called for backup and helped stop the attacker; he remains in hospital after multiple surgeries. About 25 worshippers inside were not injured.
