Quebec children placed with close relatives and friends take youth protection to court

Children, their kinship foster families and the Fédération des familles d'accueil et des ressources intermédiaires du Québec filed an action in Quebec Superior Court on Thursday. They want sections of the law they call discriminatory struck down.

In Quebec's youth protection law

significant person

When a child is removed from home, Quebec's youth protection law places the child first with a significant person, traditionally a grandparent or close relative. The federation says the term now often covers people with no family tie.

Kinship family

$34 a day

Regular foster family

$94 a day

During an evaluation of six months or more, these families get $34 a day instead of the $94 paid to regular foster families, and no support services, the federation says.

Age to which regular foster youth can get study support

20 years old

Youth in regular foster families who stay in school can get support until age 20. For those placed with a significant person, it is decided case by case and usually refused, the federation says.
