Provincial health ministers say Ottawa's one-year funding extension is not enough

One-year extension announced by Ottawa

1.2 billion dollars

Federal Health Minister Marjorie Michel says Ottawa will extend for one year the mental health, addiction and home care programs set to expire in 2027. She says that represents $1.2 billion.

“We are unified in stating very clearly that we need to go much further than that.”

— Uzoma Asagwara, Manitoba health minister

Provinces want

5% a year

Expected in 2028

3%

The ministers want the Canada Health Transfer, Ottawa's main health payment to the provinces, to grow at least 5 per cent a year. It is expected to grow 3 per cent in 2028.

What's next

Michel is expected to meet the provincial and territorial ministers in Winnipeg on Friday. Ontario Health Minister Sylvia Jones says many Ontario funding streams would be cut in half without federal support.
