AI data centres become an issue in Ontario's municipal elections
Several Greater Toronto Area candidates, including Mississauga Mayor Carolyn Parrish and Hamilton councillors Cameron Kroetsch and Nrinder Nann, have signed a pledge to oppose data centres that lack strict regulations.
“We are just asking people if they think rules should exist before a major development goes in,” said Nick Tsergas, the Hamilton resident who created the pledge.

One-year moratoriums
- Mississauga
- Oakville
- Centre Wellington
Mississauga, Oakville and the township of Centre Wellington have imposed one-year moratoriums on new data centres, while Hamilton council voted one down in July.
What we know
- The playbook makes data centres pay full power costs
- No data centre law has passed
Not yet
- What provincial rules will look like
- When they will arrive
Ontario's data centre playbook, released in August, is a guide rather than binding legislation, and municipalities are asking Queen's Park for clear rules.
