Question 10 on Alberta's referendum ballot on Monday asks whether the province should remain in Canada or start the legal process toward a binding vote on separation. Advance polls run until Saturday.

After the Parti Québécois won a minority government on Oct 5, some Alberta separatists hailed premier-designate Paul St-Pierre Plamondon as a possible ally.

Former PQ leaders Jean-François Lisée and Louise Harel say Quebec sovereigntists want to preserve a cultural and linguistic identity, while Alberta separatists are driven by the economy and political libertarianism.

"They want a bigger role within Canada and we want to leave," said Marie-Anne Alepin, president of the Société St-Jean-Baptiste de Montréal, a Quebec nationalist group.
