Nova Scotia school support workers could strike in 10 days

School support workers who could strike

5,500+ workers

More than 5,500 school support workers in eight CUPE locals could walk off the job, as talks with the province's regional centres for education and the Conseil scolaire acadien provincial, its French-language school board, near an impasse.

What a strike could mean, the union says

  • Many schools closed
  • Cancelled bus routes
  • Suspended pre-primary programs
  • Reduced student supports

The union says many schools could close in a strike, and those that stay open could lose bus routes, pre-primary programs and student supports.

What we know

  • Talks have lasted 10 months
  • A strike is possible in 10 days

Not yet

  • The employers' response

The workers provide student support, transportation, early childhood education, cleaning and maintenance, and have been bargaining for 10 months.

Nobody wants a strike. But we cannot keep accepting working conditions that undermine the very services our students depend on.

— Nelson Scott, Nova Scotia School Board Council of Unions
