Nova Scotia charges two businesses over illegal lobster buying
Lockeport and Shelburne County
Southwestern Nova Scotia
Independent Fisheries in Lockeport and a numbered company in Shelburne County face charges for buying, selling or processing lobster caught without a valid licence. The Department of Natural Resources says the charges follow a two-year investigation.
Maximum fine for a first offence
1 million $
The province raised the maximum fine under its Fisheries and Coastal Resources Act in 2024, to $1 million for a first offence, from $100,000.
What's next
The cases are scheduled for Yarmouth Provincial Court next month.
The Unified Fisheries Conservation Alliance, which represents independent fishers across the Maritimes, welcomed the charges. It sued Independent Fisheries in November 2024 and is still waiting for a ruling.
