90 million $

If re-elected, the BC NDP says it will spend up to $90 million to set up involuntary care beds at the Okanagan Correctional Centre in Oliver, British Columbia.

The beds would serve people with severe mental health and addiction challenges and complex brain injuries. Involuntary care centres already operate in Surrey and Maple Ridge.

Gavin Dew, a BC Conservative candidate in Kelowna, said his party had called for the beds for years. "The only thing that's changed is that David Eby is losing an election," he said.

Background

In July, the B.C. Supreme Court ruled that sections of the Mental Health Act allowing involuntary psychiatric treatment were unconstitutional.
