Wrong-way drivers prompt new signs near the Gordie Howe bridge
Wrong-way cases since July
64 cases
The Ontario Provincial Police counted 64 cases of wrong-way driving on Highway 401 near the bridge since it opened in July. Drivers turned around or reversed after missing the last exit before the border.
"We think these are driving errors. Drivers miss the exit and don't want to continue, because they think they'll have to go through customs."
— Stephanie Caron, Ontario Provincial Police
Ontario's transportation ministry is adding signs to warn drivers of the crossing. It says the 64 cases are few next to the roughly 11,000 crossings the bridge records each day.
Missed the exit?
To avoid the border, leave Highway 401 at exit 1 for Ojibway Parkway. A driver who misses it should carry on to a staffed toll lane, where workers send them back to Windsor without going through customs.
