Most respondents back Prime Minister Mark Carney's push to sell beyond the U.S., and 72 per cent are willing to be patient for a better trade deal with Washington.

What the poll found

  • 76% say non-U.S. markets matter more now
  • 84% back partnerships such as with the EU
  • 72% will wait for a better U.S. deal
  • Nine in 10 support a more self-reliant Canada

Among the leaders polled, 76 per cent say diversifying to non-U.S. markets matters more than six months ago, and 84 per cent support partnerships with stable partners such as the European Union.

"From a Canadian perspective, we're starting to see the tariffs really bite," said Lachlan Wolfers of KPMG Law Canada, who says businesses also want tax and regulatory reform.
