Draft statement maps closer Canada-EU ties ahead of a Montreal summit

In the draft

  • Bids on EU cloud and AI contracts
  • Talks to join the Galileo satellite system
  • EU investment in critical minerals
  • Joint purchase of 50 water bombers
  • Talks on the Erasmus student exchange

Dubbed an alliance for the future, a draft joint statement dated Sep 22 would let Canadian firms bid on EU cloud and AI infrastructure contracts as if Canada were a member country.

Canada and the EU would jointly buy 50 Canadian-made De Havilland water bombers, to fight wildfires by 2030. The Calgary-based maker said it was not engaged in the discussions.
