Alberta
On Monday, Albertans vote on whether to hold a future referendum on separation, and answer five questions on immigration put forward by Premier Danielle Smith's government.
Alberta's five immigration questions
- More say over economic immigration
- Services limited by immigration status
- Health and school fees for non-permanent residents
- 12 months in Alberta before social supports
- Proof of citizenship to vote provincially
The questions ask about more provincial say over economic immigration, limits on services, fees and a 12-month wait for non-permanent residents, and proof of citizenship to vote provincially.
Current admissions
45,000 a year
PQ promise
35,000 a year
In Quebec, the new minority Parti Québécois government campaigned on cutting permanent resident admissions from 45,000 to 35,000 a year.
“We do need a serious debate on immigration because demography is destiny.”
— Jason Kenney, former Alberta premier
Lawyer Avnish Nanda is campaigning for a no on the immigration questions, and Prime Minister Mark Carney urged voters in Calgary on Thursday to say “no to the nine.”
