Competition Bureau says Quebec's real estate board abused its dominance

The bureau says the Quebec Professional Association of Real Estate Brokers and its subsidiary, Société Centris, refused to give members a data feed and restricted how the data could be used.

What the new data feed includes

  • Sale prices
  • Listing history
  • Property characteristics

Under a consent agreement, the association will now give its members a real estate data feed with sale prices, listing history and property characteristics.

The solution is “tailored to the Quebec reality,” said Pierre-Olivier Simard, president of the association's board, since Quebec's privacy laws are stricter than in the rest of Canada.

Background

The bureau opened its investigation in 2023, after an earlier case against the Toronto Regional Real Estate Board over rules on sharing real estate data with clients online.
