Canada's military tests anti-drone technology in Alberta

CFB Suffield

Southeastern Alberta

The Department of National Defence's research division held a counter-drone workshop at Canadian Forces Base Suffield, in southeastern Alberta, from Sep 14 to Oct 9.

Companies testing drone defences

22 companies from six countries

The workshop brought together 22 companies from six countries that build drone defences, with members of Ukraine's armed forces on hand to advise them.

It's something we didn't necessarily see coming fast enough, so we have to hurry to catch up.

— Gabriel Doré, Armed Forces drone task force commander

At the last workshop in 2024, Australia's AIM Defence won a $1 million award for a laser that burns drones in flight. The laser is now used on battlefields on three continents, and the company has opened offices in Canada.
