Albertans back limits on immigration in the other referendum questions
Yes to more provincial control of immigration
55 %
Preliminary results show 55 per cent of voters want Alberta to take more control of immigration, and about 57 per cent back limits or fees on some newcomers' access to services such as health care.
What the immigration questions asked
- More say over who comes to work in Alberta
- Programs only for citizens, PRs and approved status
- A one-year wait for temporary residents
- Fees for health care and education
The yes side led on all five immigration questions, including a one-year wait for temporary residents before some social supports and fees for health care and education.
The constitutional questions were split, and only Question 8, on letting provinces opt out of federal programs, was losing, 51 per cent to 49.
What's next
University of Calgary law professor Shaun Fluker said no legal consequences flow directly from the nine questions; Smith plans to use the results to push for talks with Ottawa and the other provinces.
And us?
Prime Minister Mark Carney said Ottawa and the provinces can build a sustainable immigration system “without constitutional change.” The federal immigration levels plan is due in November.
