Quebec Liberal MNAs take their oath without mentioning the king

All 39 Liberal MNAs sworn in on Monday pledged loyalty to the people of Quebec only, a first for the party since a law adopted in late 2022 ended the required oath to the monarch.

“We are federalists, we are not monarchists; it is not the same thing,” said Madwa-Nika Cadet, the Official Opposition's chief whip.

Of the 39, 17 took the oath in French and English, which leader Charles Milliard called a tradition dating back to 1867.

The Liberals rose from 18 to 40 seats in the Oct 5 election and form the Official Opposition. A judicial recount is under way in Vachon for the 40th.

Milliard said he is ready to work with Paul St-Pierre Plamondon's minority Parti Québécois government, but will not budge on a third referendum on sovereignty.
